| The Duckman-o-thon is on! |
[Apr. 6th, 2009|08:58 pm] |
(I emailed this directly to those who expressed interest in attending, but I'm posting it here for posterity)
We're set to begin the Duckman-o-thon! The winning evening is... Monday!
Only two people expressed a strong interest in attending, and Monday was the day they could both (usually) make it. If attendance is generally low from week to week, we can skip a week if/when one person can't make it.
Mark your calendars; the first viewing will be:
Date: Monday, April 13th (one week from now!) Time: 7:00 PM Place: My house (post a comment or send me email if you are interested, and don't know where I live)
Other details: I'm on the first floor, so ring the first floor doorbell. It sometimes doesn't ring if you don't push the button hard enough. Worst case, knock on the window to the right side of the door.
I have a housemate. I informed him that I would have people over on a weekly basis, but be respectful of his space. In particular, please refrain from opening random closed doors, because one of them leads to his bedroom. Also refrain from stomping on the living room floor, as his office is in the basement directly below it.
You're on your own for dinner, but if you don't eat before arriving, I have takeout menus for places that deliver. Including a really good Thai restaurant. I ask that you do not eat in the living room; we can pause the 'thon to let people eat in the kitchen. |

[Apr. 2nd, 2009|03:03 pm] |
Ok, first a brief recap:
The plan is to get together once a week at my place at 7:00 PM to watch Duckman. This will happen on a weeknight, not the weekend. We will watch 4 episodes back-to-back each week. There are 70 episodes total, so it will take about 4 months to get through them.
I need to figure out which night we will do this. For those interested in participating, please leave a comment answering the following questions:
1. Which night(s) can you commit to always coming (always free)? 2. Which night(s) can you usually come, but may occasionally have to miss (usually free)? 3. Which night(s) do you always have other plans (never free)? 4. Which night would you prefer?
As an example, here are my answers:
1. Always free: Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri. 2. (none) 3. Never free: Thurs 4. Prefer: Monday |

So on a whim, I stopped in at Newbury Comics last night on the way home from work. And I discovered that, while I wasn't looking, they've finally released the entire series Duckman on DVD! Man, I've been waiting for this for years! Needless to say, I snagged it without a second thought.
So... who's up for a Duckman marathon? Ok, not a one-day marathon, but I thought it might be fun to get people together on a weekly basis, on some weeknight after work, to go through the show in batches. Maybe 4-6 episodes per week. There are 70 episodes total, so it would take a couple of months to get through them at that rate. I would be willing to commit to any night Monday-Friday for this, except for Thursday.
Is anyone interested? If so, which night works best for you?
(ETA:) My first choice would be Mondays, so if no one expresses a preference, that will be the default. |

So I picked up Death Magnetic, the new Metallica album, which just became available today. I have not yet listened to every song on it, but so far I will say that The Unforgiven III is the greatest song ever recorded by anyone in the entire history of mankind.
Also, listening to that song while viewing the new visualizer that comes with iTunes 8 is a damn near religious experience.
That is all. |

It's Easter candy season again, but this year CVS doesn't seem to have those pecan nougat eggs that I like so much. They do, however, have Russell Stover brand filled chocolate eggs that are similar to Cadbury Cream Eggs, but in different flavors. I find the Marshmallow & Caramel flavored eggs to be particularly tasty, though that's the only one of the two flavors that I've tried, and I don't remember what the other one is.
When I was in CVS today I also noticed a bin labeled "DVD Best Sellers". Somehow I have trouble believing that "Soccer Dog: The Movie" is a best seller, though. |

I don't know which is sadder: the fact that I just watched the entire 22-minute-long episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad on the new Futurama DVD, or the fact that I paused it when answering the phone, getting food, etc, so that I wouldn't miss anything. |

So I recently discovered Context Free Art. Apparently, someone came up with a context free grammar for describing graphics, and wrote some software that will parse code based on said grammar and generate the resulting image. Check out the gallery for examples of what can be done with this. It's pretty cool stuff.
P.S. I'm user Doodpants. |

Wednesday evening, I saw "Weird Al" Yankovic perform live. Though I've been a fan of his for most of my life, this is the first time I've seen him live. The concert was in New Bedford (yes, apparently there's a New Bedford now), which was quite a hike to get to and back from. The people I went with bought the tickets back in June, so we got excellent seats - third row! Close enough that we got splashed!
These are the songs he performed, in order:- Polkarama!
- Canadian Idiot
- Close But No Cigar
- Why Does This Always Happen To Me?
- It's All About The Pentiums
- You're Pitiful (During this one, he repeatedly removed clothing, revealing different clothing underneath. At the end, he was wearing a Spongebob T-shirt, a ballerina skirt, boxer shorts with hearts on them, and fishnet stockings.)
- Wanna B Ur Lovr (During this one, he wandered out into the audience and interacted with various female audience members.)
- A medley consisting of bits of the following:
- Couch Potato
- Do I Creep You Out
- Some song I've never heard before, but which I'm guessing is titled "I'm In Love With The Skipper", during which he was dressed like Gilligan
- Headline News (He only sang one verse, and it was one that wasn't in the original version. I'm guessing it was about a more recent news item, but unfortunately I was preoccupied with writing song titles down. So by the time I noticed that it was a new verse I had missed it, so I don't know what it was about.)
- Confessions Part III
- A Complicated Song
- eBay
- Bedrock Anthem
- Ode To A Superhero
- Pretty Fly For A Rabbi
- Trapped In The Drive-thru
- Gump
- Eat It
- I'll Sue Ya
- The Saga Begins (This was accompanied by a full complement of storm troopers, plus Darth Vader and Boba Fett. But all they really did was stand in a line at the back of the stage, and sway and bob their heads slightly.)
- Yoda
- Smells Like Nirvana
- Amish Paradise
- White & Nerdy (He came out riding a Segway!)
- Fat
And then for the encore, he did:- We All Have Cell Phones (an in-joke based on one of the Al-TV segments that was shown on the video screen during an earlier costume change)
- Albuquerque (with an extended version of the donut shop sequence)

There's a Ms. Pac-man/Galaga machine in the Regal Cinema Fenway that's really strange. I don't know if it's set to easy difficulty, or if there's a bug, but Ms. Pac-man moves twice as fast as she should, while the ghosts move at normal speed. This makes the game much easier than it should be, as outrunning ghosts is no problem. In the earlier levels, I was able to eat all the ghosts almost every time I ate an energizer, for major scorage. I made it up to something like level 7 before my game ended. I lost my last life because apparently at that level when you eat an energizer the ghosts become edible for less than a second. I grabbed the energizer and went for a ghost that was right there and got killed. Then after the game ended I noticed that Ms. Pac-man was moving at normal speed in the demo. Weird.
Oh, and the Simpsons movie kicked ass. This must be what they've been saving their good material for all these years. |

So I went to the post office today to get stamps. I used the vending machine, which gives dollar coins as change (which is half the reason I like using the vending machine). In the past I've gotten both golden Sacajaweas and Susan B.s Today, however, I got a new type of dollar coin that I didn't even know existed. This one is golden, so at first I assumed they were Sacajaweas, but instead they have John Adams on the front. And what's weirder is that there's writing embossed on the actual *edge* of the coin. It says "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the year. |

So I'm tentatively starting to actually use my LiveJournal account. I originally created it just so that I could read certain posts of prog that are (or were at the time) friend-only, while my "real" blog is here. But my "real" blog has always been for longish essays, the kind of things that can be relevant long after they are written, and which I can point people to so that I don't have to repeat myself. Whereas I'll use my LiveJournal page for quick personal notes that aren't relevant for very long, the kind of thing that I've avoided putting on my other blog. Dunno how often this will actually happen, though. :-) |
